First EVER library MTG Brawl

Our first ever official library MTG Brawl (MTG = Magic the Gathering, for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about) will be on Saturday, October 8 at 1 pm. Bring your decks and yourselves and we'll supply the prizes.

How it will work: Players draw numbers. Those whose numbers match will play each other three times. The player that wins best of three games moves on to the next round. This will continue until we have one winner!

If you've never played Magic, we can try to teach you on Saturday, but you probably won't learn fast enough to play in the brawl. You also have to have your own deck to play in the brawl. All will be explained on Saturday.

As most of you know, today is the TEEN SUMMER READING AUCTION (3 pm at the library). This is probably my favorite day of the year because YOU GUYS GET REWARDED FOR READING AWESOME BOOKS by bidding on fabulous prizes and eating pizza. While reading is a reward in itself, the auction is probably one of the most fun things that we do at the library.

If for some reason you cannot make it to the auction today, we will have prizes available for those who turned in their reading logs by 9 pm last night. You can pick up your prizes starting next week. Please call us (617-972-6437) or stop by the teen desk if you have any questions!

No, I'm not talking about the earthquake we had a little while ago (although the apocalypse may be upon us). I'm talking about the end of summer. While most of you are sad that school is starting again (you shouldn't be, school is awesome, plus you get to see all of your friends again!), we are sad that it means the end of the summer reading program. :......(

The summer reading auction is on Wednesday, August 31 at 3 pm and reading logs are due no later than 9 pm on Tuesday, August 30. If you cannot make it to the auction, we'll have prizes available for you the following week, so stop by the library and pick yours up.

Teen Lit Book Club: TENDER MORSELS

We started a book club for adults that love to read teen books, confusingly titled Teen Lit(erature) Book Club.

Is this a book club for teens? Yes, teens are more than welcome to attend, but the club was started because there are lots and lots of adults that like to read teen books and we thought this would be a good way for them to get together to discuss said books.

When does the club meet? Roughly every third Tuesday of the month at 7 pm in the teen room (check this blog and the library calendar for confirmation before showing up though!)

How do we know what to read? We post the books here and in the teen room. You may also call the teen room to find out what up next.

Now that we have all the preliminaries out of the way, you may want to know when we're meeting next and what we're reading. Well, here you go:

So you may be wondering, "what's going on in the teen room this summer?" Well, good thing you were pondering such an important question because we have A TON of stuff to do, other than summer reading, of course. Every Monday through Thursday we'll be having something going on at 3 pm. Everyday has a different activity:

MONDAY = GAME TIME
TUESDAY = MOVIE TIME
WEDNESDAY = CRAFT
THURSDAY = TEENS, BOOKS & PIZZA

For GAME TIME we'll be playing video games, board games, card games, etc.

For MOVIE TIME we'll be watching a movie in the Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room and having delicious, delicious snacks.

For CRAFT, we'll be crafting (PINS ANYONE?!?!)

For TEENS, BOOKS, & PIZZA we'll be sitting around, eating pizza, talking about books, life, whatever else you may want to talk about. All meetings are teen choice, meaning you just show up and talk about what you've been reading. Sometimes we'll have suggested books to read, but they are not required.

How does it work?

For every hour you read, you get one point. Use your points to win AMAZING prizes at the auction at the end of the summer. Easy!

1. Register for the program at the TEEN SUMMER READING ICE CREAM MONDAY PARTY on June 27 at 3 pm.

2. Record the hours you read on your summer reading log.

3. Turn your summer reading log(s) in to the teen desk at the library anytime between June 27 and August 30.

4. Come to the auction on August 31 and win prizes!

Who can participate?

Kids going into grades 6 through 12 are invited to participate in the TEEN summer reading program.

Where can I get my summer reading logs?

You can pick up your summer reading logs at the teen desk in the library. All you have to do is record your hours and then turn them in to the teen desk. We’ll keep track of your logs for the summer.

What other activities will be happening during the summer for teens?

As part of our summer reading program we have fun stuff to do planned for almost every day at 3 pm! Crafts, book clubs, movies, and gaming tournaments will be happening every week. What if I can’t come to the auction?

If you cannot make it to the auction, we will have prizes for you to pick up at a later date.

Teen Lit Book Club: MARCELLO IN THE REAL WORLD

Hey adults! Do you like teen fiction? Do you want to talk about teen fiction? Well, here's your chance. The Teen Lit Book Club is for adults (although teens are welcome, too) that love teen literature. Our next Teen Lit Book Club selection is Marcello in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork. We'll be meeting on Tuesday, May 17 at 7 pm.

Seventeen-year-old Marcelo Sandoval hears music no one else can hear, part of the autism-like impairment no doctor has been able to identify. Marcelo is tagged with a "developmental disorder" because of his pervasive interest in God and all things religious and because he does not relate to others as expected. He's always attended a special school where his differences have been protected. But the summer after his junior year, his father demands that Marcelo work in his law firm's mailroom in order to experience "the real world." There Marcelo meets Jasmine, a beautiful and surprising coworker, and Wendell, the son of another partner in the firm. Marcelo learns about competition and jealousy, anger and desire. But it's a picture he finds in a file — a picture of a girl with half a face — that truly connects him with the real world: its suffering, its injustice, and what he can do to fight.

Middle School Craft: SEED PLANTING!!!

Now that it's FINALLY spring, we can start thinking about the summer. And what better way to do that than planting seeds! For this week's Middle School Craft, we'll be planting seeds in peat pots (little biodegradable pots that you can plant directly into the ground) and watch them grow. You can take your pots home or leave them here and visit them after school. All of this excitement will take place on Monday, March 28 at 3 pm. This program is open to grades 6 through 8 and is limited to 12 people, so be sure to get here early to reserve your spot!

At 6 pm on March 16 we'll be watching a movie about how Bruce Willis is nearly indestructible and he starts to fight crime and then he comes across a man made of glass. It's an awesome movie and you should watch it. Snacks will be provided as well. Delicious, delicious snacks. In case you can't tell it's Bruce Willis month at the WFPL. Last week Bruce Willis was a futuristic taxi driver who was trying to save earth by hitting on Milla Jovovich. A couple of weeks before that he was an ex-CIA agent on the run for his life by kidnapping a lady and reading sappy romance novels.

Teen Literature Book Club is tomorrow!

Teen books aren't just for teens! So that's why we started a Teen Literature Book Club for adults who like to read teen literature. Tomorrow is our firstish meeting (the first one was snowed out) and we'll be talking about The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. It's that time again. What time, you ask? IT'S GAME TIME! This week not only do we have Teen Game Afternoon, but we also have Middle School Game Time!!! That's right, on Monday (January 31) the teens (high schoolers) will have a chance to show their stuff as we set up the Wii, board games, card games, etc. at 3 pm. And on Thursday (February 3) at 3 pm the middle schoolers will be able to do the same. As it can get kind of crazy in there, we have to limit these game times to the first 12 people that show up. So make sure you're ready by 3 pm...

Teen Literature Book Club: THE SPACE BETWEEN TREES

Teen literature isn’t just for teens! Believe it or not, adults like teen literature, too. In response to the increased interest in teen lit, we are starting a book club for adults that focuses on teen literature. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, January 11 at 7 pm. The book that we’ll discuss is The Space Between Trees by Katie Williams. Come by the teen room in the library to pick up your copy. So, for the holidays, you may be traveling. In a car. Far, far distances. What happens when it gets dark and you can no longer read the awesome book you checked out from the library? You listen to an audiobook! Two audiobooks that Kelly has listened to recently and absolutely loved are The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie and If I Stay by Gayle Forman.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
This is a book that you may want to listen to on your iPod. But maybe not, it depends on how easily you get embarrassed. The best part about this audiobook is that the author is the narrator! HE IS AMAZING!
Arnold Spirit, a goofy-looking dork with a decent jumpshot, spends his time lamenting life on the "poor-ass" Spokane Indian reservation, drawing cartoons (which accompany, and often provide more insight than, the narrative), and, along with his aptly named pal Rowdy, laughing those laughs over anything and nothing that affix best friends so intricately together. When a teacher pleads with Arnold to want more, to escape the hopelessness of the rez, Arnold switches to a rich white school and immediately becomes as much an outcast in his own community as he is a curiosity in his new one. He weathers the typical teenage indignations and triumphs like a champ but soon faces far more trying ordeals as his home life begins to crumble and decay amidst the suffocating mire of alcoholism on the reservation.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Okay, so it starts out with a horrific car accident, maybe not the best idea to listen to in the car. But it's such a good book and recording, it's worth the scare factor.
The last normal moment that Mia, a talented cellist, can remember is being in the car with her family. Then she is standing outside her body beside their mangled Buick and her parents' corpses, watching herself and her little brother being tended by paramedics. As she ponders her state (Am I dead? I actually have to ask myself this), Mia is whisked away to a hospital, where, her body in a coma, she reflects on the past and tries to decide whether to fight to live. Via Mia's thoughts and flashbacks, Forman (Sisters in Sanity) expertly explores the teenager's life, her passion for classical music and her strong relationships with her family, friends and boyfriend, Adam.

The last Teen Game Afternoon of the year will be on Monday, December 13 at 3 pm. And we have new Wii games to play (Donkey Kong Country Returns or Goldeneye, anyone???). Kelly would also be willing to teach anyone interested in Settlers of Catan how to play. And there is also the Magic the Gathering games that seem to pop up at every game afternoon, so all modes of gaming should be well covered.

Art Geeks and Prom Queens. By Alyson Noel.

I finished this book in a day because I enjoyed it. Its 226 pages but the font is fairly big. This is a good book because, its written as the main character Rio, (named after a album Duran, Duran) and the author writes as if she were a teen too! A summary of this book (without giving the ending!) is: Rio a 16 year old girl flies from New York to a big schmancy house in LA. Rio wants to be considered ‘cool’ but not popular. Kristi, a popular girl decides to pick her up and hang out with her. Kristi falls from popularity as Rio gains popularity. She gets guys hitting on her and wanting to sleep with her. She finally is so fed up she goes a little bit crazy. You can either read the book to find out or just ditch it. I would recommend this book to people because its something you can get sucked into and never want to stop reading or end. The setting is mostly at parties, school and her house. The problem is that Rio has the girls hating her and she has to figure out her relationships. The main characters are Rio, Jas, Kristi, Jen-Jen, Kayla, Rio’s mom.

OMG, WHERE DID THE SUMMER GO? As many of you know, school is starting soon because EVERYONE is looking for their required summer reading books. That also means that our summer reading program is ending!

This Friday marks the last day that you can turn in your summer reading logs as the AUCTION is on TUESDAY, AUGUST 31 at 3 pm! THAT'S NEXT WEEK! So, please be sure to turn in your reading logs by 5 pm on Friday so that you can earn as many points as possible for the auction. If you cannot make it to the auction, we will have prizes for you to pick up after August 31.

For our next Teens, Books, and PIZZA meeting, we'll be talking about Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Speak is a CLASSIC teen book. It's one of those books that EVERYONE should read, especially when you are a teen.
